We chatted with EvilMike, guitarist of Luna in Sanguinem, scroll down and read the 18 questions, some veterans who have been in several battles, this is for you Metal maniac.
FBM- How is Luna in Sanguinem Formed?
EvilMike- At the very beginning I already had plans on creating a New Band and already had 2 songs finished on Guitar. I was a long time friend of Patt Maxwell (Drums) and had spoken to him about this. He agreed we should start a band. We then talked to our long time friend Rod Valdez (Bass) and he came to practice and joined the band.
Then we all 3 had ideas for a band name so we all picked 3 names and wrote them down and voted. When we had difficulty and still we were not satisfied we then used a Latin to English translation. At that moment outside of our jam spot in the nite sky was a Blood Moon. We then unanimously decided upon The Latin name Luna in Sanguinem. Under The Blood Moon.
Finally when we had enough music we wanted to start playing live concerts locally. I never wanted to be the singer and never wanted to play guitar solos. I just wanted to headbang and jam heavy and cool Metal riffs. So I wrote a couple guitar solos and the lyrics and started singing until we could find other permanent members.
It was at a live show in Chicago that we saw our old friend and local Vocal Legend Skip Mcgullam who has fame from Classic Thrash Metal Release Num Skull- Ritually Abused. He watched us perform and asked if he could sing. I gladly accepted and was excited as Skip had always been like a older Brother to me. We asked the other members and they of course agreed. This is how we became.
FBM- Several Members of the band belong to or have had a career in other acts, how has the experience with Luna in Sanguinem been now?
EvilMike- Everything has been Awesome! Of course At times Men will disagree or become irritated but we can always look beyond this.
Other bands we have belonged to are WRATH & Dementox and I am still active with Evil Incarnate. I also was a member of Num Skull in the early and middle 90’s when the band switched from Thrash to more Brutal Death Metal.
FBM- Do all members of Luna In Sanguinem participate in the composition of the songs?
EvilMike- I always write the Music at Home by myself but sometimes ask the band how they like a idea or part of a song I am working on for feedback. A couple of times the drummer Patt had a idea he would hum out with his mouth while behind the drums or he would have a way he would like to end a song and ask me to do a certain riff again and extend it or something like this. I don’t mind writing the music because it gives a band a sound and I know what I want.
As for the lyrics with my experience doing so in Evil Incarnate it is easier for me and they all enjoy what I create. On the Flu World Order Album I asked the guys to help on a couple parts so they would feel better connected. I don’t want to be overly controlling I am just the best one for the job. We’re all friends so we also think of each other when we can and I know this is important.
FBM- What is the method you use to compose before starting to record? For example, first, work the other elements under a guitar or bass, Etc.?
EvilMike- I work with the drummer first to make sure we have it. Then we record a fast demo just for ourselves. I then decide if I like the riffs in the song and it has a good flow. Once this is solid I show our bassist and he writes his bass lines in the same key if he doesn’t wish to play exactly what I am doing on guitar or to compliment my parts and the drums. Then I begin writing lyrics and do a riff vocal recording. Once I listen and we decide it’s good I then hand off the lyrics to our singer and he learns the song.
For studio recording we always start with just a temporary Guitar scratch track and a click. Then the drummer listens to this and does his part. Once finished with drums we erase the scratch track and I lay the permanent Guitars. We then do bass and then come any guitar solos. After this is vocals and any backing vocals, extra sound effects and or samples and our job is finished until we listen to examples sent from the Recording studios of the mixing to make any adjustments before finalizing.
FBM- When I heard “Global Bloodbath” it made a very pleasant impression on me. In what way did that recording help to have continuity and continue making songs?
EvilMike- We realized after a few songs and then hearing some of my new songs that we were for sure developing a style and a sound unlike most other bands. I made a conscious effort to continue with this for the remaining songs of Flu World Order.
I enjoy keeping it different from what I created with Evil Incarnate. I also enjoy playing other styles into our music I would never incorporate into Evil Incarnate. Sure people have noticed a similarity on occasion but that’s because I write a certain way and always wanted to be different and have developed my own way of interpreting musical ideas while maintaining a hint of my influences.
FBM- In Global Bloodbath there are many elements of Classic Metal, What are the Musical Influences, Possessed, Rigor Mortis, Infernal Majesty, Hallows Eve, do you feel identified with those bands?
EvilMike- Yes these bands are all great and also I of course enjoy most Classic Metal but for Luna in Sanguinem particularly, WASP, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Queensryche, Slayer, Exodus, DEATH, (Old/Early) Metallica & Megadeth, Pile Driver, Testament, Dark Angel, Pestilence, Asphyx, Dismember, Twisted Sister, (old/early) Motley Crue, Pantera, (old/Early) Fear Factory, Terrorizer, early Napalm Death, Carcass, Suffocation, NILE, DIO, GOREFEST, and even some Hardcore like CroMags & Blood for Blood. There is so much awesome music. The list of course is a giant one so I must stop.
FBM- What was the Lyrical theme for “Flu World Order” ?
EvilMike- This song in particular came about at our disgust with The NWO and this Planned Pandemic attempts to Destroy our lives and our Country. Many across The World have fallen Prey to this Brainwashing Campaigns that are blasted across all Media outlets. The hand of Death they have reached nearly every corner and crack so maybe some will wake soon after hearing our album and opening their Eyes and ears. Maybe this way we can help save ourselves.
The remaining songs are mainly Science Fiction based but a lot is from factual evidence. We enjoy stories of the otherworldly and we enjoy Hauntings and ghost stories and I wanted it to be dark but not Satanic. I didn’t want to be stuck into a corner with lyrical topics such as a Black Metal band would be.
FBM- What is the difference in terms of song composition for “Flu World Order “ ?
EvilMike- A couple songs are older actually. Song “Feed The Dead” is the very first song I wrote it just didn’t get recorded till now. Song “Path of The SkinWalker” I did not like the entire middle of the song so I re wrote it a couple different times till it was perfect in my opinion. Also a couple other riffs changed along the way and we worked on this for over 2 years till it was correct. Later I also added the ending riff after the drummer Patt suggested it needed something else.
As for the rest of the Album it was just so what we enjoy first just as anything I always write it must first be fun and sound good for me. If anyone else also enjoys the music after that it is just that much better then.
FBM- It strikes me that Luna In Sanguinem doesn’t have an edition with any Label or am I wrong? Why does it happen or is it the band’s decision to work independently without any support from any Label?
EvilMike- We have no problem being independent and sold a lot of copies of “Global Bloodbath “ on our own. This EP still does great for us. It actually had been released onto Cassette in Indonesia (Asia) via Label Fatalism Musicness. Another Label was wanting to release in South America but that has been so long I’m unsure what will happen and another wanted to do the CD in USA but has had also nothing but empty promises. So we fight on. So, if any label wishes to speak to me we are ready.
FBM- Do you have any particular Expectation with the promotion and dissemination of “Fu World Order “?
EvilMike- In a Way, Yes…We just enjoy what we do. We are true Metal Maniacs and Headbangers and we only live one life so this is the life we choose.
We have a Promotion Campaign we paid for current and are getting great Radio play. We have had a few interviews already and many people are now talking about this New Album. It would be of course best to have a Label or 2 with good reach but we are also happy to continue self financing everything until that time comes. We had a few offers but they were just garbage and wanted us to pay thousands and thousands of dollars for our own promotions. What a joke!
We have self financed from the beginning so if we are to continue at least we see the rewards not some cheap and generic label.
FBM- How has the experience of playing live with Luna In Sanguinem been?
EvilMike- It’s had its share of ups and downs. So many promoters don’t care about the bands. These types are only in it to try and gain some glimpse of personal fame and the only thing that matters is the Party for them at the bands expense and discomfort. A few promoters we have worked with truly care and think of the musicians and our tour with Death Metal Legends Malevolent Creation and Narcotic Wasteland was amazing.
Generally it has been fun but of course you must take the good with the bad and hopefully the good weight is heavier.
During the Planned Demic we toured over 70 shows. We stop for no one. We do what’s best for us and the fans.
FBM- You are Veterans of The Underground, for me a personal concept before and now in Metal it will always be difficult to attract attention, what do you think?
EvilMike- Yes I of course agree. When this all was New in early to mid 80’s was so much better but even then a band had to work hard consistently and actually have good sounding songs regardless and that part has not changed. People ask what my secret is but I don’t have a better answer.
I strongly feel if you do everything you can and utilize all at your disposal no matter what that entails and do it long enough something will happen for a band eventually. And if not have fun and enjoy the process. Live Metal in your Heart and Soul and do this because you Love it and have Passion.
What does the Underground mean to you from a personal point of view?
EvilMike- It’s our home and no matter where this band sails in the future we will always remember that. The UG is a place for everyone to enjoy and find new bands. It’s where we all begin. Fuck Mainstream bullshit and posers and Fuck nerds who believe in Cancel Culture and Censorship, This is Metal not some music for Babies and anyones Grandparents. They call it The Devils Music so I doubt he cares for anyones poor little feelings if that is true.
FBM- Can you tell us what the Extreme Metal circuit is like in your City?
EvilMike- Where we live and practice as a band is very close to both Chicago Illinois and also Milwaukee Wisconsin both Major Cities and Also both states here in USA. North of us it’s Horrible with Posers and Nerds who cry and cancel anyone for any minor infractions past or present. The fans in general are awesome of course and A few good bands with true Metal qualities can be found but mostly people are scared and go with the crowd as far as booking shows, not very Metal at all. In Chicago just South it’s not Much better or different actually. All the bands of the world of course come here but once the small handful of quality Promoters dislike you or your band for standing true and staying true and refuse to submit to foul Communistic parasites running this country currently you are then blacklisted. All it takes is one e mail from one Nerd or one phone call to a club and your finished here because they are all so afraid anyone may possibly become offended, And unfortunately as mentioned so many of the bands even if good musicians support these clubs and promoters so it will never end. I wait for them to next be targets so I can laugh and say I told you so, you were just part of the entire problem sitting idle, damn Pussy!
FBM- What do you think about Religion and Satanism?
EvilMike- As Mentioned I didn’t want to enter any of this into the band. We made this agreement at the very beginning. I have my personal beliefs and am the singer of Evil Incarnate but I do enjoy making riffs in a song and only playing it 3 times to mock the Holy Trinity.
I will state however there is a Spirit World and other Beings from other dimensions. As for Things such as most religions like Christianity, it is a Falsehood to enslave Humanity for Zionists. It makes most men Weak and is a tool that has crushed Culture around the World especially in Europe. People had religious beliefs that go back to Ancient times so we are supposed to believe a forgery now.
FBM- What is the state of health in Metal in general?
EvilMike- It seems The Thrash revival in USA has started to die off some or stagnate and Black Metal from what I can tell is still powerful Globally. I Know Metal fans from Texas USA all the way down thru Mexico, Central America and South America are just as strong as anywhere. These people have always appreciated Metal! Europe seems to be the same as always and now Asia has become a huge hit spot for Metal, especially Death and Brutal Metal.
I’m sure Thrash is strong in Europe, Mexico and South America but Globally people have a new found love again for Old School Death Metal. The current trend seems to be Metal Core and Slam.
